Hi, my name is Chris Schmidt – President/Owner of Schmidt Bros Motorsports. SBM is dedicated to no-nonsense and no-gimmick performance parts at a fair price. Ever since I can remember, I’ve built things to go fast. I grew up around racing my whole life. My father, Roger Schmidt, raced two stroke alcohol hydroplanes and runaboats. He helped me get racing at age 14. On the other hand, my stepfather Jim Avram built 500+ hp small block Chevy V8’s for circle track racing. So, that sums up how high performance has been etched into my mind.
My Grandpa Schmidt owned & operated Mel Schmidt’s Marine in Saginaw, Michigan. They were a Yamaha & Evinrude dealer. I’ve always liked Yamaha snowmobiles. In 1998, I started racing snowmobiles with team Luptowski on the M.I.R.A. circle track circuit. I then decided to go on my own in 2000. That is when SBM was born. My identical twin brother Stephen and I started with a 1995 Yamaha V-Max 600 running enduros. We had fair success and tons of learning experience. In 2003, Stephen and I broke the Yamaha 2 stroke qualifying record on a 1998 SRX 600 at the Soo I-500 in Sault St. Marie, Michigan. This put us into the 90 mph club, which turned a lot of heads. Here is a quote from SnowWeek on February 17, 2003 “The top story in qualifying was the performance of the Yamahas. A total of seven qualified for the race. Leading the way was the two-stroker of Chris Schmidt with an average speed of 91.58 MPH. Gordie Postula had the fastest four-stroke with an average speed of 89.80 MPH aboard the J&M Racing Yamaha RX-1.”
For years I talked and dreamed about starting an aftermarket business. With the release of Yamaha’s new Phazer line-up in the fall of ’06, it gave us the perfect opportunity. I had a bunch of ideas but nothing in concrete. The next step was to purchase our guinea pig ’07 Phazer FX. I swear, the factory thread-lock was still wet and we had that thing dissected down to nothing. We worked hard at R&D for a whole year before releasing any products to the market. Our goal at SBM is to offer top shelf parts at affordable prices with customer service second to none.
